Your embarkment into aviation entrepreneurship isn’t quite as farfetched as you may have thought. Can you imagine the looks I get when I explain to people I’m an aircraft dealer? Most of them think I’m crazy!
Here is how it works, you first to fill out an Aircraft Dealers Registration Certificate Application. Also know as FAA form AC8050-5.
The form is very self-explanatory and requires a $10 application fee plus $2 per every extra registration you request.
So What Will I Receive?
After your application is approved the FAA will mail you as many aircraft registrations you requested with your name or your business’ name. Think of these like dealer tags at a car lot. The dealers haven’t actually registered the car in their name, because they are for sale. But they can’t go drive them without a tag because that’s illegal.
Real Life Example
You come to me and say “Jason, I really want to sell my airplane but just don’t have the time will you sell it for me?”
After agreeing on the terms of the deal I start to advertise your aircraft for sale.
I get an inquiry from a gentleman who wants to see the airplane 75 miles north of the airplane’s home. As a dealer you’ve taken the airplane onto your “lot” thus it would be considered “unregistered.” This is where your dealer registration comes in handy. You can just place it in the aircraft (like a car dealer with a dealer tag) and fly the airplane to the gentleman wishing to see it.
The only stipulation is the aircraft can only be flown under the dealers certificate if the airplane is being flown somewhere to show or being test flown with a prospective buyer.
