Aviation terms to know (part 1 of 3)

by Jason Schappert

Accelerated Stall

Any stall that occurs at a loading of more than 1G

Adiabatic Lapse Rate

The rate which ascending air cools or descending air warms.

ADIZ

(Air Defense Identification Zone) area of airspace which can be found over land or water, extending upward from the surface, within which the ready identification, the location, and the control of aircraft are required in the interest of national security.

Angle of Incidence

The angle at which an airfoil is fixed in relation to the longitudinal axis of an aircraft.

Bernoulli’s Principle

The pressure of a fluid is proportional to it’s velocity. (Like the Colorado river in the Grand Canyon speeds up as the canyon gets narrower) Thus air flowing over the camber of our wing accelerates in the same manner and an area of low pressure is created generating lift.

Calibrated Airspeed

The indicated airspeed of an aircraft, corrected for position and instrument error.

Critical Engine

In reference to multi engine aircraft the engine who’s failure has the most adverse effects on an aircraft. (p-factor, yaw, etc…)

Deadstick

Flight with engine and propeller stopped

Decalage

In reference to a bi-plane The difference in angular settings of the wings

Dew Point

The temperature to which an air molecule must be cooled for the air to condense into visible moisture.
