Video: Engine Failure on Takeoff Part 1

by Jason Schappert

We’ve already learned what to do in the event of a engine failure at altitude. We also covered an engine fire, but what about a sudden loss of power on take off. Follow along on this 2 part series to discover what exactly to do if you lose power shortly after takeoff with and without usable runway left.

You know, it’s also worth mentioning that the initial gameplan is to land straight ahead if there is not enough runway available. No 180 degree turns allowed.

And it’s prudent to know the area around your home airport. Since the majority of your takeoffs will be here, you have a higher probability of experiencing an engine failure on departure at the homebase.

Know ahead of time that theres a bean field just left of runway 22. Or that you can make the football field if taking off towards downtown. Make the decision ahead of time so that your reaction in an emergency is automatic.
