Spatial Disorientation – Illusions in Flight

Spatial Disorientation – Can you name all possible inflight illusions? Do you know when you could expect these illusions. I find many students just know what spatial disorientation is on the basic or rote level and fail to ever go beyond that. If you know the different types of spatial disorientation and are aware of when to expect them you can know exactly how to recover and in-turn make yourself a much safer pilot.

Jason, just wanted to let you know you do a good job. Your tips are quite helpful, especially to a new pilot such as myself. Thanks!

Thank you so much for your kind words! Really keeps me motivated to keep on working at it :)

How is your flight training going?

In all that I have read on the subject of SD I have yet to find any mention of the most perilous portion of my experience with it. At that precious moment when you realize that your instruments are not in accordance with the seat of your pants a form of intense internal mental confusion occurs. You have to decide between a form of panic and logic. If you do not exit that mental place into the trusted hands of your instruments you will crash and probably die.

Jason, I found mzeroa a few months ago and i just wanted to say thank you very much! I’m majoring in aviation sciences at Delaware State University and your site has helped improve my flying and write several papers. You’re making my life easier and I just wanted you to know I appreciate it.
